This symbolic painting pays homage to the squadrons of African-American pilots who fought in the American Air Force. Lee Archer and his teammates are seen here attempting to bring home a distraught Fortress. The Tuskegee Airmen took their name from the training center for “colored” pilots which was strictly reserved for them. Unlike the Army, segregation reigned in the US Air Force. Black and white pilots rarely rubbed shoulders. The red fin and very colorful nose is characteristic of the Tuskegee Airmen squadron. Benjamin Freudenthal.
